A new five-star hotel is planned in central Athens, at the corner of Solonos 79 and Mavromichali 12 streets. The Culture Ministry's relevant departments conditionally approved the architectural study for the project.

The investment is linked to S CHIMEIO MON S.A., the property owner, headed by civil engineer Charalambos Stathakopoulos. The design includes a complex with three underground levels and a pool.

Proximity to two buildings by Ernst Ziller, the 1887 Chemistry building and a structure on Mavromichali 6 dating to 1882, led to conditions on the study. These include scrapping the eighth floor, which exceeded the seven-floor and 24-meter height limits, and requiring a 2.50-meter setback on other floors.

Ministry departments favor an architectural approach with horizontal and curved elements inspired by the modernist buildings in the area, replacing the original geometric design. Excavations will proceed under supervision of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Athens City, with work halting if archaeological finds emerge.

Stathakopoulos also heads XKS Architects & Engineers and retains management control of both companies involved in the project. This is the second hotel-conversion architectural approval in Athens' historic center we have recorded in recent weeks.
