Greece's Interior Ministry, through its Macedonia and Thrace service, has decided not to initiate a protected-status process for an old building in Mileona, Prespes municipality. The same property is the site of a planned 42-bed 4-star hotel by MILEONA RESORT Monoprosopi IKE, including a basement, pool and fencing, with the file also containing a demolition study for ruins dating to 1955.

The decision diverges from an earlier opinion by the Florina Architecture Council, which had recommended preserving the building, citing traditional architectural elements in a two-story brick house with a central sachnisi. The Council had at the time withdrawn the hotel matter from review, suggesting a revised proposal incorporating the old structure.

An on-site inspection recorded extensive collapses of the roof and part of the upper floor, along with near-total loss of the accompanying outbuildings. Based on these findings, the service concluded the building has lost much of its authentic value, justifying its decision not to pursue protected status.

At the same time, the service recommends revising the proposal to better fit the landscape: gentle interventions, preservation of open space, removal of extensive pergola-type canopies, use of compatible materials such as stone, wood and tile, and avoidance of the pool. It noted that the municipality's spatial planning study had proposed declaring Mileona a traditional settlement.

For the building in question, if over 100 years old, a Culture Ministry review is required before any intervention, while the final demolition permit remains under the authority of the local building department.
