Kastellorizo Gets €27m Infrastructure Plan Covering 37 Projects
A plan to upgrade the port, water and sewage networks, and housing for public employees on Kastellorizo.
A 27-million-euro plan covering 37 projects is underway for Kastellorizo and the surrounding island complex, aimed at upgrading infrastructure and improving living conditions. The plan was discussed during a recent visit by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to the island, where he met with local and regional officials.
According to the government, the objective is to address long-standing infrastructure gaps and create conditions that could help Kastellorizo attract and retain more permanent residents. Mitsotakis said the outstanding infrastructure issues should be addressed over the next four years, citing the port, water and wastewater systems, public-sector housing, waste management and renewable energy as priorities.
Among the main projects is the reconstruction of Kastellorizo's port infrastructure, funded through the EU-backed ESPA program. Other interventions include replacing critical sections of the water network, installing a telemetry and monitoring system, and upgrading the sewage network and wastewater treatment facilities.
Housing is another focus, particularly for doctors, teachers and other public-sector employees on the island. The Defense Ministry is building 12 homes, some for healthcare and education staff, while the Hellenic Coast Guard plans nine more for its personnel. Four additional homes are being renovated with parliamentary funding. A 1.9-hectare site with 30 old homes deemed unsuitable for habitation will be transferred to the Municipality of Megisti for new housing development.
The government is also moving to strengthen local healthcare staffing, with recruitment of two senior doctors being completed and two nursing positions expected to be advertised.
