Tourism Minister visits Halkidiki to discuss growth and infrastructure
Greece's Tourism Minister visited Halkidiki, meeting with local bodies on the destination's challenges and growth prospects.
Greek Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni visited Halkidiki as part of a tour of Northern Greece, accompanied by Secretary General for Tourism Policy and Development Vasiliki Koutsoukou. The visit began in Agios Mamas, where the Minister represented the Prime Minister at the unveiling of a monument to the 1821 fighters of the Battle of Eli.
An expanded meeting followed at the Halkidiki Regional Unit headquarters in Polygyros, attended by Deputy Regional Governor and Halkidiki Chamber President Ioannis Koufidis, representatives of the Panhellenic Association of Rented Rooms, the local MP, the Deputy Regional Governor for Tourism of Central Macedonia and other local stakeholders. Discussions covered the state of tourism in the area, sector challenges and infrastructure needs, referencing the Special Spatial Framework for Tourism and projects funded through the Recovery and Resilience Fund. Talks also touched on special forms of tourism, gastronomy and the area's thermal springs.
Participants also referred to the recent wildfire in Sivyri and the safe evacuation of visitors, noting the area's quick return to normal during the peak summer season.
The Minister also visited the Polygyros Archaeological Museum, touring exhibits spanning Halkidiki's history from prehistoric times to Late Antiquity, including the Lambropoulos archaeological collection.
