Serifos council rejects plan for new five-star hotel

Serifos municipal council issued a negative opinion on the environmental study for a €5m, 36-room five-star hotel planned by DNA Hospitality Group.

The Serifos municipal council issued a negative opinion on the environmental impact study for a planned five-star hotel worth €5 million in the Kalo Ambeli area, at the 'Mouria' site. The project belongs to DNA Hospitality Group ΙΚΕ and involves a 36-room, 94-bed unit on 18.7 acres within a Natura 2000 protected area.

In the vote, five councillors opposed the opinion, two supported it, and two abstained. Serifos mayor Konstantinos Revinthis cited a 2002 decree to challenge the number of planned swimming pools and raised concerns about the complex's size and its impact on the island's environment.

Particular discussion centered on water supply, as the company has requested permits for drilling, with estimated annual extraction of up to 3,000 cubic meters, in addition to a connection to the municipal network, on an island already facing water shortages. The inclusion of a biological treatment plant was viewed positively, while waste management raised concerns.

Councillors who supported the project cited job creation and benefits for the local economy. The design includes a reception building and four room units totaling 1,497 square meters, with seasonal operation from May to September and about 20 employees. The project, the company's first hospitality venture, has been included since 2021 in a development law incentive scheme, with the company still seeking investors.

A similarly negative opinion was recently issued for an 810-bed five-star hotel on Kos.
